Saying Goodbye as Chair

Saying Goodbye as Chair

By Dr. Michele C. Dávila Gonçalves

Michele Dávila GonçalvesAfter two-terms (six years), I am stepping down as Chair of the World Languages and Cultures Department at the end of this academic year. The new Chairperson will be Dr. Kenneth Reeds, so the department will be in good hands.

I would like to thank all of you for helping and supporting me during these years. We created a new Department Policies document, and we were blessed to have the Ed Francis Endowment that has helped us to support our students who study abroad and our faculty with their scholarship. With the endowment we created the new Book Award for an outstanding senior in our major, and we have celebrated this three years in a row. I am also proud of the energy our faculty has put forth in their teaching, with the creation of new courses and curriculum updates, and their passion in research. I am also proud of our students, who are so open-minded and engaged in their role as citizens of the world that they amaze me every day.

It has been a pleasure to serve the department and the university during these increasingly turbulent times, and I will return to teaching full-time. We will persevere! See you around next fall!
